Mercedes-Benz is working on the next-generation model of the Mercedes-Benz GLS with spy shots indicating that the model has already reached production stage and some final testing could be underway.
Mercedes-Benz GLS has managed to garner an admirable fan following with the SUV being pegged as one of the popular luxury SUVs around the world. It is expected that Mercedes-Benz will incorporate much more technological innovations as well as features in the upcoming GLS.
Eager eyes managed to spot the next generation Mercedes-Benz GLS being tested on the road. The new GLS will see massive upgrades including semi-autonomous driving tech and a plug-in hybrid version as well. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS will be based on the new MHA platform that will bring several changes on the structural front of the SUV.
We expect to see a massive reduction in weight while improved structural rigidity as well, while the luxury SUV will be able to pack in more technologies over the current model. Much like the current model, expect the new GLS to be a seven-seater, albeit with more liberated space and creature comforts. Mercedes is also likely to incorporate semi-autonomous driving tech from the S-Class and E-Class on the new GLS.
Visually, the camouflaged test mule shows a bulky and imposing design on the Mercedes-Benz GLS with a massive grille up front, flanked by the elegant headlamps on either side. The bonnet too boasts of an enormous bulge reminiscent of what we saw on the X-Class concept. The test mule seems to carry similar dimensions as the current GLS.
With respect to the powertrain, expect to see a range of petrol and diesel engine options on the new generation Mercedes-Benz GLS while there will be a plug-in hybrid version as well. Reports suggest of a 3-litre petrol paired to an electric motor making it to the new GLS with nearly 400 bhp of power. Other upgrades will include a more powerful AMG version with the new 4-litre bi-turbo V8.
Rumours also suggest a more luxurious Maybach version of the new GLS will also be in the offing to take on the new line-up of super luxurous SUVs. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS will take on the Range Rover SV Autobiogaphy, Bentley Bentayga and the likes. Meanwhile, the standard new gen Mercedes-Benz GLS will take on the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and the upcoming BMW X7 three-row SUVs.
