Attention (and blame) has shifted from Colin Kaepernick to Chip Kelly

Monday, 10 Oct, 2016

He started against San Francisco again on September 21, 2014, for Arizona in a 23-14 win, completing 18 of 33 passes for 244 yards with two TDs and no interceptions.

Prior to Thursday, Kelly had been quick to stamp out any notion of benching current starter Gabbert in favor of either Colin Kaepernick or Christian Ponder.

"I see a group that's hurting because they've invested so much in this", Kelly said.

"I'm not naming any starters for Buffalo".

"I don't think anybody played well on offense". We need to shore that up.

After another loss of the San Francisco 49ers, this one before a national audience, Blaine Gabbert's position as starting quarterback may be in question. Kaepernick's past looks good on paper, but it's Gabbert's struggles in 2016 that should really point towards a change. Chandler Jones continues to be a dominant force for Arizona, tipping a pass that was caught by Calais Campbell, setting up the Cardinals touchdown.

"We were a hungry team, a team that knows that we dug a hole for ourselves and we had to win this game", coach Bruce Arians said. "I think we have a bunch of guys who want to be part of the solution not part of let's blame somebody else for it". His two interceptions led to 10 Arizona points.

Frustrated fans began chanting "We want Kap" in the third quarter of the game, in reference to backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has not attempted a pass this season.

San Francisco coach Chip Kelly honestly still can not think Blaine Gabbert gives his team a better chance to win than Kaepernick.

The 49ers allowed seven sacks Thursday including a late safety.

Gabbert has a 9-31 career starting record and has completed 58 percent of his passes for 890 yards, five touchdowns, and six interceptions. He had a 56.1 passer rating. He brought it here to San Francisco.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Gabbert was pressured 17 times, tied for the most in his career, and he was 1-of-6 with an interception when under duress.

Perhaps Kaepernick could provide a different look for defenses and turn some of those scrambles Gabbert has had success with into bigger, game-changing plays. I've got to play better. He's sudden in terms of what he does. Although he had a few missed tackles, Bellore did make nine defensive tackles, two special-teams stops and he shared a sack with Michael Wilhoite.

"They did a really good job in the twist game", the coach said. "Blaine or Kaep. I've got to protect for them".

NOTES: Kelly said he's "hopeful" DT DeForest Buckner can return next week after missing Thursday with a foot injury.

From there, Kelly and his staff planned to meet again Friday afternoon to discuss future plans, including what the offense could look like against Buffalo.
